Ericsson Mobility Report is one of the leading analyses of data traffic available, providing in-depth measurements from the world’s largest selection of live networks spread all around the globe. The report uses those measurements and analysis, together with internal forecasts and other relevant studies, to provide insights into current traffic and market trends in today’s Networked Society.

According to the latest Ericsson Mobility Report done on Africa:
– proliferation of mobile technology continues at a rapid pace
– by the end of 2014 there will be a little more than 880 million Mobile subscriptions (77% mobile penetration)
– by 2020 smartphone subscriptions are expected to top 6.1 billion
– by 2020 mobile video traffic to increase tenfold and constitute 55% of all mobile data traffic.

Fredrik Jejdling, President & Regional Head of Ericsson sub-Saharan Africa says: “The increased availability of low-cost smartphones in Africa will lead to a rapid increase of smartphone subscriptions in the region. However, GSM/EDGE-only subscriptions will remain the most common subscription type for the next five years due to the high numbers of lower income consumers using 2G-enabled handsets.”

Despite the increased rate of sales, the report says there is still plenty of room for growth in the sector and it even predicts that 85% of Africa and Middle East mobile subscriptions will be 3G/4G by 2020…
