The Gabonese presidency announces that the head of state Ali Bongo Ondimba, received the price “TIC for sustainable development” awarded by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), during a ceremony organized yesterday at the United Nations headquarters in New York on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the ITU.
The award was presented by Union Secretary General Houlin Zhao. The distinction “ICT for sustainable development” is awarded to leaders who have been able to take decisive actions to improve access to information and communication technologies (ICT), reduce their costs and extend their dissemination for development socio-economic. The ITU thus welcomes Gabon’s major advances in the development of ICTs for citizens.
As a reminder, the World Symposium for Regulators gathered in Libreville in June 2015 some 400 senior telecommunications officials at the initiative of the ITU, under the chairmanship of the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications and Posts (Arcep). The Gabonese authorities had then reaffirmed on this occasion their ambition to guarantee accessible, available and affordable ICT for a better contribution to the GDP. Promise kept and rewarded.
