Two transmission relay sites were installed this week by the mobile operator Ooredoo to provide 3G internet coverage of the Tunisian Sahara.
In a press release, the operator explains that “this will allow the residents and users of these territories to fully adhere to the process of democratization of information and communication technologies, to communicate with each other and with the rest of the world”.
Despite geographic vagaries, Ooredoo becomes the first operator in Tunisia to provide 2G and 3G coverage in the Sahara area. And the company does not intend to stop there since a few months ago, it expressed its impatience to move to 4G. The operator, which has said it is ready to make the heavy investments necessary to bring its infrastructure up to standard to provide this technology, is awaiting the award of the 4G license by the Tunisian telecoms regulator.
