Dr. Eddy Agbo, a Nigerian bio-technologist, created Urine Test for Malaria (UMT), a device to screen for malaria in the urine. With UMT, doctors will be able to tell, in just 25 minutes, whether a patient has malaria or not.
The UMT is actually a rod that accurately detects the proteins of malaria-causing parasites in the urine of fever patients. UMT’s margin of error is almost nonexistent because the device only reacts to all of the parasites causing malaria.
The device of Dr Eddy Agbo was selected among the finalists of the African Prize for Innovation. After the competition, it will be sold at a cost accessible to the greatest number. This invention will be particularly useful in Africa where malaria is one of the main causes of infant mortality.
