The Cameroonian government, through its Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, will sign a partnership with the Canadian Consortium CCENA Expansion, for the establishment of these digital centers of excellence in Douala and Yaoundé.

The Cameroonian public authorities continue to reap the benefits of the International Forum on the Digital Economy held in Yaoundé from May 15 to 17. As with Camtel, Campost or even the project to build a national digital library, the Cameroonian government, represented by the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, has obtained a partnership agreement with the Canadian Consortium CCENA Expansion. The project aims to set up two digital cities, one of which will be based in Yaoundé and the other in Douala.

ICT centers of excellence

Evaluated at around 60 billion CFA francs, the said project aims to provide Cameroon with two ICT centers of excellence each comprising: a Techno Center, constituting a large ICT training center, which, through initial training and continuing training, will generate ICT skills for Cameroon and the countries of the region; a Techno Village, a structure for monitoring and facilitating discussions and projects around ICTs, with a role in generating innovative projects based on ICTs in the service of the modernization of the governance of the State and of the Cameroonian economy and countries of the sub-region; and a Techno Park, housing not only a Data Center which will be the heart of the technical device, business incubators for young graduates so that they can create their own digital SMEs and, a Business Center likely to host companies from digital technology sectors. The development objective of the project is to increase the use of ICTs in order to improve the productivity and competitiveness of Cameroon, ranked 147th out of 178 countries with a digital access index of 0.16.

Generate income

However, in addition to training, the digital cities will offer “a favorable environment for partnerships between the public sector and the private sector, between researchers and industry, thus contributing to the promotion of research, technological innovations (ICT applications) and creation of new businesses and sustainable jobs in the digital sector ”, we learned from an official source. According to this information, the Digital Cities will also generate income. In this regard, “the offices and spaces for rent built respectively over 3600 square meters and 14,040 square meters are expected to generate around 5 billion CFA francs per year. The 14 meeting rooms totaling 3,500 square meters as well as the large conference hall with 500 seats will generate around 3 billion per year ”, it is still said.
