Today we are attacking a myth: the one that says that the African student does not come home after studying abroad?

While many of them often hesitate between staying away or returning to Africa to build their careers, it is not true that the majority go for the first choice. Irawo led the investigation and the results could not be clearer.

70% plan to return to Africa

A study was done by Irawo’s agents. 500 people took part, 85% of whom are between 21 and 35 years old. 78% are students and are spread all over the world, with 45% in North America, 10% in South America, 35% in Europe, 7% in Asia and 3% in Oceania. The diversity of participants made it possible to have a representative sample of young Africans in the diaspora. When asked to comment on their desire to return to Africa, 70% voted yes.

Why do they prefer to return to Africa?

Many young Africans in the diaspora are said to be attached to their cultures and to the African lifestyle. Life is less stressful there and they feel good there. Some speak of their missing love for their homeland and family. Staying away from your home country can sometimes be difficult especially when you have left behind those you love and cherish.

But the reason that stands out the most is that of participating in the development of the continent. Most survey respondents believe that Africa has enormous development potential that must be tapped. One of the means mentioned to participate in this boom is precisely entrepreneurship. Several people expressed their desire to invest in their various countries and to create businesses that bring value and contribute to economic development.

Several factors raise doubts and fears in them

Even though young Africans aspire to settle in their homes, several problems are still slowing their momentum. The first factor listed by respondents is unemployment. It is obvious that when a young person goes abroad for his studies, it does not please him to come home and find himself unemployed. Second, the fragility of the legal framework is one of the fears mentioned several times during the survey. Not being able to defend your rights, especially in an entrepreneurial activity, is one of the biggest risks to take. Corruption, favoritism and nepotism add to this to form a serious obstacle to the return of African sons and daughters. Also, other people fear that they will no longer be in tune with the realities of the continent and that they will not be able to make themselves understood. Some fear being the victim of the dishonesty of their own who could make them see all the colors when they return.
