The Guinean government launched last week the country’s first industrial cashew processing plant in Kankan, Upper Guinea, reports Commodafrica.
With an installed processing capacity of 10,000 tonnes of raw material per year, the unit is expected to provide employment for 500 people over time. It was made possible thanks to an investment by Diaouné Agro-Industrie, a subsidiary of the company Diaouné et Frères.
According to Mohamed Diaouné, president of the parent company, Guinea’s annual cashew production was 70,000 tons in 2018.
According to the official, this volume could rise to 200,000 tons by 2025, thanks to the executive’s program to support and distribute seeds to producers.
As a reminder, cashew nut is one of the priority sectors for the Guinean government which launched in 2016, an initiative to revitalize it. The crop employs more than 50 000 producers, particularly in Boké in the north-west of the country and in Kankan.
