Cameroonian engineer, born in 1987, Arthur Zang stands out for having designed the CardioPad, a medical tablet allowing rural populations, far from health centers, to perform a cardiac examination. This invention therefore aims to reduce the mortality rate from cardiovascular diseases. Chairman and CEO of Himore Medical Equipments, founded in 2014, Arthur Zang strives to discover new solutions designed to provide every individual with access to medical care.

A meeting at the origin of CardioPad

Raised in Mbankomo, a village located about twenty kilometers from the Cameroonian capital Yaoundé, Artur Zang, after obtaining his baccalaureate, studies at the University of Yaoundé. Holder of a bachelor’s degree in computer science in 2004, the young inventor specialized at the Polytechnic School of Yaoundé and obtained his engineering degree in computer science, design and software engineering in 2010.

During an internship in 2009 in the cardiology department headed by Samuel Kingue, Artur Zang realized that the medical establishment used a paper electrocardiogram. Faced with this observation, Artur Zang asked Professor Samuel Kingue to design software that could be used on a computer.

For four years, Artur Zang exploited all the means available online to accomplish his project. Adapting the system for tablet use involving extensive knowledge of electronics, Artur Zang follows for over a year following a Mooc offered by the Indian Institute of Technology.

A race for funding

With limited means not allowing him to finance the design of the CardioPad prototype, Artur Zang turned to his mother to take out a loan from a bank.

To obtain additional financial resources, the young inventor sent the diagram of his prototype to Microsoft as part of the Imagine Cup competition. The material sent by the computer company allowed Artur Zang to develop an operating system embedded on a tablet.

Thanks to the recording of a video presenting the operation of CardioPad, broadcast on YouTube, Artur Zang was able to meet Paul Biya, President of the Republic of Cameroon, who donated 35,000 euros to him so that he could produce the first thirty CardioPad devices, made in China.

Thanks to the prize obtained (together with a bonus of 30,000 euros) in the “Applied Technology” category at the Rolex Awards, which rewards entrepreneurs who design innovative projects, Artur Zang was able to produce 30 additional CardioPad tablet models. These were fully distributed on Cameroonian territory.

How the CardioPad works

During the medical examination, the electrodes, placed on the patient, are attached to a module that captures the resonance of the electrodes and then transmits it to the CardioPad tablet.

Using the software with which the tablet is equipped, it will process and save data on a server that can be consulted by Cameroonian cardiologists.

The exam is then interpreted by the doctor who makes a diagnosis sent back to the server.

Despite the spirit of innovation shown by the young African generation, it is faced with obstacles such as the lack of investment by African states in the scientific field. Research is a necessary field for the development of Africa.
