Burundi will soon be equipped with an ICT development strategy that will enable the country to make it a tool for economic growth. On 19 October 2018 in Bujumbura, Jean-Jacques Massima-Landji (pictured), the representative of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for Central Africa and Madagascar, said that project 2BDI 0015 on the institutional reform of ICT in Burundi, launched in 2014, is coming to an end.
Speaking at the country’s Digital Agenda and ICT Enactment Meeting, the ITU representative explained that the appropriate and innovative regulatory framework that will soon be put in place in Burundi will help to the rise of the digital economy. This more appropriate legal environment will also contribute to improving the socio-economic conditions of the population, especially young people and women, through greater attention given to access, new uses and security.
In the past, Burundi had already adopted an ICT development strategy. But an ITU diagnosis revealed important gaps. Hence the launch of the 2BDI 0015 project with the support of the United Nations Specialized Agency to correct these shortcomings.
