Success is attracted by becoming attractive yourself and what is generally called luck is only the meeting of an immense number of opportunities with your preparation. It is wrong to imagine luck as thinking that one can succeed by chance and that it is by bad luck that one fails. Success is created through specific habits that you pick up and that weave it daily. All successful entrepreneurs around the world have developed certain habits that have allowed them to end up being successful. I share with you the 4 that have been most useful in my entrepreneurial journey.

The habit of focusing on excelling in what you are passionate about
I meet a lot of executives employed by large companies, young graduates or students who aspire to create their own business. But the crucial mistake that they all make without exception and that I had to make myself is to want to invest in several areas at the same time. Few people want to admit it, but when you do everything (or a lot) you don’t excel at anything and you are known for nothing.

As a student in 3rd year of management at UCAD, I launched my consultancy firm specializing in 5 different fields. My objective was to be able to reach several markets at the same time. But what I didn’t know was that if you wanted to catch two hares at the same time you might not get any. And each time I see the same things with some entrepreneurs. Some entrepreneurs who partner with others specializing in different fields, thinking that they will be able to more easily reach other niches and widen their fields of activity at the same time. It is understandable but to succeed as an entrepreneur, it is very important to know what you are passionate about and the area in which you can excel.

Once you’ve clarified that, everything that you do that has nothing to do with your domain should no longer interest you. Today I have refocused on what I am passionate about, coaching and training, and I can tell you that just with that my days are completely loaded and I manage to thrive very well. I happen to chain 5 to 6 meetings a day, and pass the act of answering my emails or having lunch quietly. I think that one should not confuse the inability to intensify one’s activity in a single domain with the need to multiply the domains to have enough activities. You can focus on excelling in a field that you are passionate about, being active and profitable because you are the best and attractive in the world. People want the best plumber, the best carpenter, the best driver, the best mechanic, the best painter, the best fashion designer. And concentration increases your ability to become better than the dispersion and the entrepreneurial gluttony that make us believe that to excel, you have to be in several fields.

Even if they tend to diversify later, all the big companies were first known to have excelled and become billionaires in a specific field: Facebook, Microsoft, HP, IBM, Apple and others. Small businesses that never get big want to grow with multiple domains at the same time and are not known for nothing.

You can develop a variety of services and products if you want, but not before wondering why in the medical field specialists are paid better than generalists.

The habit of continuing to learn and systematizing learning
Pretending to be in control of all the details of life is nothing but vanity. Lessons to learn are not missing at any time. As long as we live, each new experience we make will contribute to our training and our transformation. As the other said, “Life is a school that never issues a graduation certificate.” As an entrepreneur you must identify the books that you absolutely must read, the training that you must follow, subscribe to coaching programs, subscribe to magazines to be informed of news in your field brief identify and effectively reinforce the news skills to develop to excel.

Sometimes I’m stunned to hear some entrepreneurs say they don’t have time to read. I said to myself the same thing. But there is a phrase from Confucius that got me back on track. She says: “No matter how busy you think you are, you have to find time to read or you are indulging in assumed and chosen ignorance.” It is important for an entrepreneur who wants to excel to identify all the essential skills he must have in order to be able to take his career to the next level and produce extraordinary levels of results.

The habit of discipline to do what they should do
Jim Rohn says, “We all have to suffer from pain: either the pain of discipline or that of regret. The difference is that discipline weighs a few grams while regret weighs tons ”. Successful entrepreneurs know that doing business is no small task. They know that it takes a lot of sacrifice, a lot of personal effort to achieve higher levels of results. They know that to finally get there and not have regrets, you need a certain discipline, a certain organization so as not to be deconcentrated and remain impactful. This discipline involves the ritualization of certain actions until they become habits.

As we tell H&C, a leader never has an alibi; he must know that the change is 96% based on himself. The leader’s ability to discipline and change himself will push him to produce better levels of results and inspire others to do it. Even a disorganized entrepreneur cannot organize a business. And as Robin Sharma says in The Wisdom of the Monk Who Sold His Ferrari, “If you want to be the leader of others, you have to be your own leader. You have to climb your own mountains and climb to the top, while doing your own conquest. You have to avoid making excuses when things go wrong and take some responsibility. ”

I remember this election of the office of the association of management students of FASEG, I was in the master’s year and all the members of the office agreed that I was the best person to lead the association given my level of commitment and my performance. So I was elected without problem. But at the same time they were a little skeptical I was a real “unruly”.

At the end of the general assembly, we went around the table to give each member the floor so that he could give their opinion on me and their expectations regarding the new mandate, but I was so soaped that you’d even think these people hated me. But in reality, they didn’t hate me. They were absolutely right about my need to contain myself and to work on my personal discipline and self control. At that time I was too sufficient, too sure of myself, not at all humble and very impulsive; attitudes which could really constitute constraints so that I could carry out my mandate.

But do you know what I did?

The same evening, when I went to play sports, listening to the songs of my favorite singer Youssou Ndour, I stopped 20 minutes by the beach to clear my mind and see the new habits that I should adopt to be able to do something that no president has done so far. And I can tell you with great pride that it has helped me a lot to find the discipline to be able to successfully carry out my mandate.

During this mandate, I achieved some memorable exploits with new innovations and actions; the association had more visibility than usual. I even organized a big forum which made the whole faculty move. Even the dean who does not usually attend this kind of demonstration was obliged to come because he was so proud of us. And the most important thing is that thanks to my behavior, to my level of leadership I had such a level of impact on my members that they themselves discovered that they had unlimited potential and that they were able to achieve great things.

All this would not be possible if I had not taken the initiative to discipline myself, to change before trying to impact on others. As the other said, either you control your life, or it controls you, the choice is yours!

An entrepreneur who wants to succeed must develop:

  • The discipline of getting up at dawn to be able to enjoy your day fully and without too much stress;
  • Body discipline is that which consists of playing sports to accustom your body to endurance;
  • The discipline of abundant knowledge to have the courage to learn new things every day and improve;
  • The discipline of rest to know when to rest and how to do it;
  • The spiritual discipline to know how to be at all times and at all times in a state of grace;
  • ental discipline to control your thoughts better, and to be too confident to doubt, too noble to get angry, too strong to be afraid and too happy to have worries.

The habit of persevering until you finally succeed
“Success is goal and the rest is just a comment,” said Earl Nightingale. Making a difference starts with the ability to set goals and be ready to work on them. Now, as they say, if you take anything worth doing, you will always run into trouble.

Successful entrepreneurs always have in mind that it will not be easy and that despite the difficulties, despite the blockages, despite the adversity, they must move forward, they must be hard-hitting, they must continue to excel until to become essential in their field. The entrepreneur who wants to succeed and make a difference will have to put all the assets on his side, he must know how to excel without external requirements, must know how to discipline himself, must stay focused on his objectives, must know how to control his thoughts, be self-motivated and most importantly lead a healthy life.

There is no need to remind that it is difficult to undertake. This is why if you want to make a difference as an entrepreneur, you have to make persistence your best ally. Thomas Edison failed 9999 times before he could create the electric lamp; if he hadn’t made persistence his ally, he would have given up very early.

I remember when I started my business I was in the license year. I struggled for the first 4 months before I could land my first contract. I was so happy. But imagine a little, after having worked for 2 months with the members of my team, instead of paying us the gentleman with whom we were under contract sent us his assistant who gives us an envelope. To our surprise there were only 10,000 CFA francs in it.

He is a very influential man in the business world. It was disappointing considering all the efforts we had made; but for my part, that wasn’t reason enough to discourage me. But since we didn’t all have the same level of motivation, all the members of my team let me go.

But as they say you can’t stop a person who refuses to stop, none of this could negatively affect my determination to succeed as an entrepreneur. A week later I was able to regain my strength and I could say to myself: “Cafa, you have to move on, you are too strong to be discouraged by the attitude of this gentleman”.

And as God does things right, a year later this same gentleman sponsored my event. When the secretary general of their movement called me to say that they agreed to support me, it made me tick. Here is what he said to me “Mr. X is very happy to support you again because he was the first to do it, he is sure that one day you will succeed because you are a fighter”

It left me speechless! Just to tell you how important it is to be persistent, to have a steel mind, to believe in yourself, in your abilities and to learn to move forward and move forward despite the difficulties, despite the adversity and despite blockages. And above all stay open to opportunities
