Africans and global citizens have received a healthy dose of motivational speeches on Africa’s development this week. The hashtag # AfDBAM2016 and related publications have been among the trends in many African countries. Indeed, the 2016 edition of the annual meeting of the African Development Bank group was held in Lusaka, capital of Zambia, from May 23 to 27. Heads of State, leaders, officials, leaders and participants from around the world have agreed on the urgency to act to provide a better life for the Africans of today and for future generations.

Africa development in pride

Promoting creativity and innovation is one of the AfDB’s priorities. “The future of young Africans is not at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea,” said Akinwumi Adesina, President of the AfDB during his opening speech. It is imperative for the continent to develop in order to offer the desire to stay there and allow us to live happily. Africa must create hope and opportunity for its children. Thus, the bank has established five priorities to transform Africa through objectives to be achieved by 2025. These include enlightening Africa and supplying it with energy, nourishing Africa, industrializing the Africa, integrate Africa and improve the quality of life for Africans. In this context, the New Deal for Energy in Africa was launched during this annual meeting bringing together electrification and renewable energy installation projects.

Job creation for young people

Motivated African youth spearhead inclusive growth. This is the general idea presented during the conference debate organized yesterday, May 26, between the president of the AfDB and Ashish J. Thakkar, founder of Mara Group and Mara Foundation. A lively discussion on “Entrepreneurship among young people facing energy challenges and climate change in Africa”. The President stressed the special attention the bank pays to the continent’s next generation. Indeed, in order to create a favorable climate for entrepreneurship, the AfDB devotes 5 billion USD to support start-ups of young Africans. According to him, young people have the power to change Africa, so it must be given the opportunity. As for Thakkar, this young entrepreneur known worldwide, he relies on the passion and belief that drives young people to provide solutions to the problems of the continent.

For us who aspire to a prosperous and inclusive Africa, it is high time to shout “The lion is waking up”.
