100 thousand subsidized computers for students. This is the measure that the Ivorian government has just taken in connection with the upcoming opening of the Virtual University of Côte d’Ivoire (UVCI).

“Today, to respond to the overcrowding in our universities, the state has no other alternative than distance education. This is why, for around 60,000 FCFA, the first 100,000 students who will have to subscribe to the operation (…) will receive within two months a latest generation computer, “explained Gnamien Konan, the Ivorian minister in charge of Higher Education.

With a unit cost set at 51,500 CFA francs (79 euros), or a quarter of the normal price, the devices will facilitate students’ access to the virtual teaching platform. Also, part of the 20 billion CFA francs mobilized for the establishment of the UVCI will be devoted to the extension of the wifi network, in order to allow 10,000 students to simultaneously connect to the Félix Houphouët-Boigny University, the main public university of the country, and 5 thousand in the six other public universities of the country. In addition, they will benefit in addition to an internet connection at student prices, promises the government.

The virtual university formula is indeed presented as a solution to improve student supervision and the quality of training. To the extent that taking care of students, estimated at around 170,000, is increasingly problematic due to the insufficient academic resources, particularly in terms of reception facilities and teachers.

For this academic year, the authorities will be responsible for guiding 81,359 new graduates in higher education establishments in the country.

In addition, the construction of three new universities in the interior of the country, in San-Pedro, Bondoukou and Man, is planned in the coming years to improve the public training offer.
