The management of the Telecommunications and Postal Regulatory Agency (ARTP) has confirmed that the launch of mobile number portability is planned for Tuesday, September 1, 2015. Its entry into force should raise competition a notch on the national telecommunications market. Consumers will have full powers and will be free to no longer suffer from the poor quality of network or service from telecom operators.

Indeed, with portability, telecom subscribers will be able to change service providers while keeping their telephone number. In simpler terms, a customer of Orange, Tigo or Expresso, dissatisfied with the services offered by their operator, will be able to migrate to the competitor without buying a new SIM card. No more tedious task of having to communicate this new phone number to all your phone book.

In Africa, Senegal joins the very closed club of countries which already practice the portability of mobile numbers. Nigeria and Ghana are among them. It has been since 2010 that the Pan African Institute for Citizenship, Consumers and Development (CICODEV) has asked the telecom regulator to introduce portability in Senegal. But for the organization, its launch today will be “a great wasted opportunity.” Amadou Kanouté, the director of this organization, explains that “the appropriation necessary to carry this kind of innovation cannot take place, because there was no preparation and social campaign necessary for it”.

CEO AfrikaTech

Rejoignez-nous ! LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/boubacardiallo
