The young Senegalese company continues its race to the top.
The money transfer system was so successful that the name of the company entered the vocabulary of the most widely spoken language in the country. Indeed, in Wolof, “Warima ko” now means “send me money”.
Wari allows its users, based on a network of 45,000 points of sale, to send or receive money, to pay invoices, their TV subscription or even to access information systems.
Speaking during the “Bank Days” held in Dakar on January 20 and 21, Kabirou Mbodj, the group’s general manager, shared that: “Wari, a system originally designed to provide a response to the informal (…) We are just business providers who model effects for the general public who access a service by paying “fees” on transactions ”.
According to figures shared by the site Financial Afrik, 4 billion euros were recorded in transaction flow by the company in 2015, or about a quarter of the GDP of the country from which the company originates.
It should be noted that these transactions are not limited to the Senegalese market and that 29 million people would regularly use the services of the company in the 26 countries where it is present.
Still according to Financial Afrik, the ambition for the director of the company is now to work in favor of the standardization of transfer systems in Africa like what Visa and MasterCard have done, allowing banks to outsource their electronic payment systems.
