South African doctor Imogen Wright is the creator of Exatype, software to improve the treatment of people living with HIV. Exatype allows doctors to determine which type of antiretroviral (ARV) is best for their HIV-positive patients.
Exatype selects, on the basis of a data processing system obtained by sequencing the patient’s DNA, the ARV which will be accepted by his immune system. The software detects drugs that the patient’s body will resist. The attending physician only has to proceed by elimination to choose the ideal treatment.
According to WHO statistics, 71% of people living with HIV / AIDS live in Africa. And although African governments are ensuring good access to treatment, more and more patients are resisting their ARVs. Exatype should therefore become an essential tool in the treatment of HIV-positive people. Better still, adjustments are being made so that the software can be used in the treatment of other diseases such as malaria and tuberculosis.
