With 1,800 photovoltaic panels installed on its roof, the University Hospital of Mirebalais (HUM) is the only one in the world that is powered by solar energy, according to estimates by Partners in Health and Zanmi Lasante (PIH / ZL) .
Three years after the earthquake, in May 2013, this hospital opened its doors. Built by Partners in Health and Zanmi Lasante, two NGO partners and friends (the first is American, the second Haitian), this hospital, located northeast of Port-au-Prince (Haiti), has become 7 years after the earthquake a reference for the entire Haitian medical community.
Known for the quality of its free care offered to the population of Mirebalais but also to all those who come from the four corners of the country, for its strong capacity to treat complex pathologies, for its expertise in carrying out certain interventions or surgical operations and for the he efficiency of its equipment, the Mirebalais hospital remains, alongside the Bernard Mevs hospital and the Gheskio center, a leader in the medical sector in Haiti. Leading healthcare professionals from Haiti and around the world have already lent their services there. Upstream, it was designed in 2009 by ZL (Zanmi Lasante) as a small center whose care would be intended for the inhabitants of Mirebalais. But after the earthquake, it was converted into a colossal center full of cutting-edge professionals, a training space for doctors and nurse-midwives.
With 1,800 photovoltaic panels installed on its roof, the University Hospital of Mirebalais is able to produce the energy necessary to provide medical care to more than 60,000 people. This construction project by the NGOs (mentioned above) with the support of the Haitian Ministry of Health, cost 25 million dollars (or 18.3 million euros).
