After sixty years of independence, Ghana has just entered the superpower list with the successful launch of its first satellite into space.
GhanaSat-1, which was built by students from ‘All Nations’ University in Koforidua, was sent into orbit from the International Space Center to the applause of more than 400 people, including engineers, who were gathered in the south of Koforidua town to experience this historic moment live. The first signal was received soon after.
It is the culmination of a two-year project, which cost $ 50,000 (40,000 euros) with support from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).
The satellite will be used to monitor the coast of Ghana for mapping purposes and to build capacity in science and technology. Project coordinator Dr Richard Damoah said it marked a new start for the country.
“This has opened the door for us to a lot of space activities,” he told the BBC adding that the project will also help train the next generation on how to apply satellites in different industries. in the region, such as the monitoring of illegal mines which remains a priority for the country.
