Founded by Sedric Degbo, REMA is an Ivorian startup that aims to improve the quality of medical decisions by connecting all African doctors through a mobile app that allows them to publish, discuss, resolve patient cases and collaborate in real time to make better medical decisions.
Introduce yourself and your journey
My name is Dr Sedric Degbo, I am a doctor and founder & CEO of REMA. REMA is a remote medical collaboration service dedicated to African doctors; we connect African doctors for better medical decisions.
How did you get the idea to start your business?
At the end of my medical studies, during my research I accidentally discovered a study that estimated that medical errors probably represent the 3rd leading cause of death in the world, especially in developed countries, behind cancers and cardiovascular diseases. So I logically got interested in the case of Africa, and the estimates and figures I discovered were even more shocking. Myself as a doctor was deeply challenged by this problem, and therefore motivated to find an alternative. This is how I decided to think about finding a solution to the problem of medical errors in Africa based on the potential of digital technologies. So I founded REMA, a remote medical collaboration service dedicated to doctors practicing in Africa
What is the problem solved by REMA?
In Africa about one out of two medical decisions is a medical error. This is particularly due to the low information level of the doctors, to the distance between the doctors, and the lack of adapted ways of communication between them.
To reduce these statistics, REMA aims to improve the quality of medical decisions, by connecting all African doctors through a mobile application allowing them, to publish, discuss, resolve patient’s cases and to collaborate in real time whatever the distance, to make better medical decisions and save more lives. Today REMA is more than 1000 medical cases published for a total of 3000 medical users coming mainly from West African countries and we are targeting 200,000 users by 2022.
What is your business model?
Every year several billion dollars are spent in medical marketing by organizations and companies to bring information to doctors in Africa. So we sell to these companies a complete medical marketing tool allowing them to communicate more simply and efficiently by targeted way with African doctors. And we will provide in the future a premium offer to our medical users.
What are the next steps?
Our major challenges in the short term are:
– to scale at the regional level our offline strategy of acquiring news users
– to identify business development experts who can assist us in our BtoB internationalization process
– to raise immediately at least $ 100,000 to support the development of our product and the growth of our startup
Investment
To achieve our growth objectives, we need an investment about $300,000 to make a cumulative turnover of $1,000,000 by 2022
What do you need and how can Seedstars / AfrikaTech help you?
We need financial resources, partnerships, visibility, networking and connecting with important interlocutors, to achieve our future goals.
