Nairobi, March 27, 2017 – Building skills in applied sciences, engineering and technology could be the key to economic transformation in sub-Saharan Africa. The region lags behind in terms of scientific research and development, contributing only 1.1% to global scientific production. With its demographic dynamism and its 11 million new graduates knocking on the doors of the labor market each year, Africa must quickly find ways to fill the skilled labor gap while strengthening its own capacities to face the challenges. contemporary, be it climate change or global pandemics.

From April 5 to 7, nearly 200 experts and decision-makers will meet in Nairobi for the Fourth Regional Forum of the Partnership for the Development of Skills in Applied Sciences, Engineering and Technologies (PASET). Together, they will consider how to promote these pathways in higher education, thus enabling Africa to compete successfully in the global economic arena.

“University leaders and innovators on the African continent have a lot to learn from their counterparts from Brazil, China, Korea and India,” explains Fred Okengo Matiang’i, Secretary General at the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology from Kenya, one of the five African countries leading PASET. “Kenya is delighted to host this event, which will focus on sharing innovations in applied science, engineering and technology curricula in technical and vocational education and higher education. ”

The Forum will present experiences of skills development and innovation implemented in Africa and the rest of the world, in front of an audience of senior government officials, representatives of the private sector, foundations, research institutes and centers. of technical and vocational training from around fifteen African countries but also from Korea, Brazil, China, India, Malaysia and Norway.

“This Forum will be an exceptional opportunity for exchanges and contacts for all those who wish to contribute to the transformation of Africa by investing in its technical and scientific skills”, underlines Sajitha Bashir, member of the PASET team and responsible for the East Africa zone within the Education division of the World Bank. “Through this important meeting, we hope to generate further support for PASET among African countries, the private sector and other stakeholders. ”

Launched in 2013 and led by the World Bank, PASET aims to develop, under the aegis of African governments, the entire educational spectrum in applied sciences, engineering and technologies, from technical and vocational education to postgraduate studies. The African champions of PASET are the governments of Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda and Senegal who together have committed $ 10 million in support of its initiative for doctoral studies, research and innovation. PASET’s knowledge sharing and technical assistance activities are partly funded by China, Korea and Norway.
