Africa’s e-commerce week opened this week in Nairobi, African entrepreneurs of the new generation are leaning on the opportunities offered by the emergence of digital platforms to expand their operations across the continent and beyond , local media reports.

Founders of several pioneering start-ups on the African continent have pointed out that e-commerce will unleash the potential of local businesses.

Anna Ekeledo, executive director of Afrilabs, a pan-African technology and innovation network based in Nigeria, said targeted use of digital platforms would allow local businesses to access new markets and improve their revenues.

“The potential of e-commerce has not yet been fully exploited in Africa, hence the need for entrepreneurs to use its assets to boost growth,” she said.

This five-day e-commerce meeting in Africa is co-hosted by Kenya, the African Union and the European Union. It brings together ministers, industry leaders, innovators, researchers and funders to discuss

Speaking on the occasion, Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta encouraged young African entrepreneurs to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the digital revolution to promote cross-border trade.
