The Minister of State for Transport, Jean de Dieu Uwihanganye (photo), announces the Internet in all public buses in 2019.
According to his explanations, the Wi-Fi 4G will be installed from January 2019, in the buses operating in the capital Kigali, while the Wi-fi 3G will be installed at the end of the year in the buses carrying the intercity transport and those destined to rural transport.
In Kigali, the minister indicates that dedicated bus lanes will be operational once the widening of the track is completed in June 2019. There are also plans for new smart bus shelters with Wi-Fi access. digital screens.
Since 2013, Rwanda has been testing Wi-Fi on buses. Only the city of Kigali benefited from this service. Its extension to the intercity and rural transport bus reflects the success of the experiment which lasted five years. It was piloted by the Regulatory Authority of Public Services of Rwanda (RURA), in collaboration with some public transport companies of the capital.
Internet will not be the only technology embedded in public transport buses. Electronic payment will also be introduced. The service is currently being tested. Passengers will be able to pay for their transportation costs directly with a credit card.
