“Africa is going to be at the heart of the challenges of international tech”

More than ever, the ecosystem of new technologies in Africa needs actors capable of combining inclusiveness, networks and markets. Afrobytes is one. Its initiators agreed to confide in Point Afrique

Whether in Paris, London, New York, San Francisco, Hong Kong, Nairobi or Addis Ababa, African tech intends to mark its presence. In a logic of inclusiveness where Africans would be more than just consumers, Haweya Mohamed and Ammin Youssouf initiated, four years ago, Afrobytes, a business event around new technologies with a standing Africa. After having undergone the headquarters of Medef during its third edition, Afrobytes settled in the heart of Station F. It must be said that, from the start, the objective of Afrobytes is to be a bridge between the African technology industry and other international communities. “This will bring together under one roof the best of the innovation ecosystems of English and French speaking Africa, to which will be joined actors from Europe, the United States and Asia”, explain, enthusiastic, the Franco-Somali Haweya Mohamed as well as Ammin Youssouf, his Franco-Comorian partner.

The two associated technology enthusiasts have long been convinced of this: the African tech ecosystem is exploding in increasing numbers of start-ups and hubs, but also in terms of fundraising. As the venture capitalist Partech Africa revealed at the end of March 2019, in 2018, 146 start-ups from 19 countries raised a staggering $ 1.16 billion! An almost disconcerting maturity for many observers. What to realize that Africa, in this matter, is at a major turning point which should be seized by the States to better structure the sector. To play the best score in this environment, Afrobytes imagined the innovative concept of “Pitch My Country”. This year, on May 15, at Station F, the Democratic Republic of the Congo will be the first country to take part in the exercise. This will consist of presenting the local tech environment in all its dimensions, but also a selection of hand-picked start-ups that will illustrate the diversity of imaginations and needs that young Africans have decided to satisfy. In the wake of the DRC, this year there will be South Africa, Morocco, Ghana, Ethiopia and Nigeria. Aware of the importance and relevance of such a forum, institutions like the World Bank, digital giants like Facebook and Google, and many other leading players have chosen to participate, thus highlighting their partnerships with local nuggets. Enough to support Afrobytes’ resolutely inclusive approach to African tech. Beyond the succession of events, its designers, Haweya Mohamed and Ammin Youssouf, went further with Le Point Afrique to explain its philosophy in a globalized context where the local must be increasingly taken into account.

CEO AfrikaTech

Rejoignez-nous ! LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/boubacardiallo
