The Seedstars World competition for emerging countries is expanding for this year 2017 to new countries on the African continent, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. In a press release, the organizing committee announces the competition has started an African tour during which it will unearth the best startups in more than 23 cities in Sub-Saharan Africa, including in new countries like Cameroon, the Democratic Republic Congo, and Zambia, organizing local competitions and events.
“This is a unique opportunity for participants, entrepreneurs, as well as ecosystem actors to immerse themselves in the world of digital entrepreneurship and to better understand the current dynamics of startups in Africa. The best startups in each country will have access to visibility and investment and mentoring opportunities. They will also have an opportunity to be part of a global network of entrepreneurs and investors from over 80 countries, and to represent their countries at the Regional Summit in Africa before going to Switzerland for the final phase of the competition ”, let know the press release.
Since the launch of Seedstars World, African startups have had considerable success with two startups having won the global award: SimplePay from Nigeria in 2013, and Giraffe from South Africa in 2015. In the last edition, Africa set a new record when two women entrepreneurs qualified for the top 12 of the final at the Seedstars Global Summit: Kasha from Rwanda, and Jamii from Tanzania.
