Solar occupies a preponderant place in the Moroccan vision devoted to the development of renewable energies. This great interest is fueled by the sunny nature of the country. Studies in this direction show an annual sunshine of 3,000 hours. To this end, Morocco’s potential in solar energy is undeniable. It is estimated daily at 6.5 kilowatt hours per square meter. Given this capacity, Morocco is betting heavily on solar as an energy resource with high added value. Thus, Morocco has dedicated a whole program to solar energy. Called “Noor”, this program aims to promote renewable energies to the general public and businesses. It will have the impact of reducing customers’ electricity bills and preserving the environment. The aim is also to reduce the production of electricity from fossil fuels.
The “Noor” program involves the construction of several solar power plants, the investment of which should reach 9 billion dollars by 2020. These plants will also allow an annual saving of greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to 3.7. million tonnes of CO2. The flagship project of this program is none other than Noor Ouarzazate. Spread over an area of 3,000 hectares, this plant is considered to be the largest thermodynamic solar complex on an international scale. The first phase of this megaproject, Noor I, has been operational since February 2016. Launched by Masen, this first installation will deliver 600 gigawatt hours annually, equivalent to the consumption of 630,000 inhabitants across the Kingdom. The Noor program also provides for the construction of solar power plants: in Tafilalt (300 megawatts in photovoltaics), in Midelt (300 megawatts in CSP solar power plants and 300 megawatts in photovoltaics). Also in the pipe: Noor Laâyoune and Boujdour (100 megawatts in photovoltaics), Noor Tata (300 megawatts in CSP and 300 megawatts in photovoltaics) as well as solar power plants in economic zones with a capacity of 150 megawatts in photovoltaics. Recall that Morocco has drawn up a roadmap for the development of the use of photovoltaic solar energy in Morocco, thus responding to international trends that have placed this energy as a priority.
Indeed, solar photovoltaic is more important and stands out for its competitiveness compared to other solar technologies. This technique is an efficient and clean means of producing electricity. The roadmap for the development of the use of photovoltaic solar energy in Morocco is broken down into five axes. The aim is to develop programs for large and medium-sized photovoltaic solar power plants. A mission that is assigned to the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) and Masen as well as to private producers who supply customers with very high and high voltage connections. The second axis concerns the opening of low voltage. The goal is to allow the development of large-scale use of photovoltaics in the residential and service sector connected at low voltage. The roadmap also provides for the establishment of an independent regulatory authority as well as the establishment of support programs in industrial integration and research and development dedicated to photovoltaics.
