Britain’s most prominent black professionals, including veteran broadcaster Sir Trevor McDonald, were recognised at this prestigious awards evening last night.
Earlier this year Baroness Martha Lane-Fox weighed in on the challenge facing women in Britain’s business and tech sectors, highlighting the “unconscious” bias that still exists in the workplace.
Here at The Memo we’ve celebrated women, with events like Ada Lovelace Day last week, and believe it’s important to encourage wider diversity across the tech sector.
That’s exactly what happened last night at the Black British Business Awards.
Entrepreneur of the Year
11 black business leaders were honoured for their success in business and promoting the contribution of black professionals in business. Journalist Sir Trevor McDonald was also presented with a Lifetime Achievement award.
Prime Minister David Cameron described the awards as “a celebration of the enormous contribution Black entrepreneurs make to our country.”
One such entrepreneur is Rachel Wang, co-founder of Brixton-based Chocolate Films, who was named Entrepreneur of the Year last night.
In second place for Entrepreneur of the Year was Dr Clare Eluka, founder of Premae Skincare, the first vegan-approved beauty line which she launched in 2011.
