The Beninese start-up, Olayèmi Corporate, created in 2015 the mobile application “Gbétché” which allows its users to respond to surveys on African news. The process is fairly straightforward. After downloading the application, the user has access to a number of polls inspired by African news and can vote once per poll. The results of these are updated with each vote and the user can observe the number of people who have already voted and the trends in real time. Note that user anonymity is preserved.
This application was inspired by the desire to make people’s opinions heard. Besides, the name Gbetche is taken from the Fon translation (language of southern Benin) of the words “my voice”. Thus, “With GbéTché, the intentions of Africans are revealed to international opinion in a pure, authentic way with zero rigging, zero influence”, explain the promoters of the application.
