Two Senegalese engineers fight against blood shortages
Two telecommunications engineers, Jean Luc Franseco Semedo and Ntonga Evelyne Inès, have created an application called Diamond to help alleviate blood shortages in Senegal.
The two students, from the multinational telecommunications school (EMST), have equipped their application with an alert system that sends written and voice messages in national languages to warn blood donors of a likely shortage. Beforehand, the names and contacts of donors from the various blood donation associations and other volunteers will have already been registered in the application’s database.
The objective of the two inventors is to increase the number of blood donors in the country and, ipso facto, save more lives. “It is not enough to come and donate blood on an ad hoc basis. We also believe that it is possible to retain donors, “they said.
Blood donors represent 0.45% of the Senegalese population, far from the 2% recommended by the WHO.
