It is a project that should help significantly reduce the digital divide on the island. This is the Mauritius Wi-Fi project which was officially launched on April 6, 2017 by the Prime Minister of Mauritius Pravind Jugnauth. It allows rural areas of the country to benefit from an internet connection.

Mainly targeted, community centers, youth centers and post offices. The regions of Port-Louis, Rivière-des-Anguilles, Beau-Bassin, Rose-Hill, Bambous, Flacq and Mapou were connected live.

According to Sherry Singh the CEO of Mauritius Telecom quoted newspaper lemauricien.com, 200 people can be connected simultaneously in 250 Wi-Fi zones, and this within a perimeter of 50 m at a connection speed of two megabits per second.

To have free access to Wi-Fi, users must select the Mauritius Wi-Fi network, then dial their phone number and the PIN code which will be sent by SMS.

Anyone with a mobile phone number, whether they are customers of Mauritius Telecom (Orange) or other telephone operators, can also have free access to the Internet via the Wifi Hotspots.

On security precautions, we learn from Mauritius Telecom that the system is fully secure and filtering prohibits access to obscene and illegal sites.

“This is an accomplished step in our vision to transform Mauritius into a digital economy. We are at the center of a digital revolution … I had this dream of democratizing access to technology and connectivity. In Budget 2016-17, I announced 250 additional Wi-Fi spots, which will make a total of 600 Wi-Fi zones. The country will become a digital island, ”said Pravind Jugnauth.

Rejoignez-nous ! LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/boubacardiallo
