Kenyan start-up M-Kopa specializing in the sale of solar-powered products is preparing to launch digital solar-powered TVs for citizens residing in areas with little or no access to the national power grid.
The solar televisions will be made available to customers and they will pay 50 Shillings per day for a year, depending on the size of the television, after which they become full owners, according to the company.
In M-Kopa’s current sales list, energy-efficient stoves have the best sales, but with the launch of solar-powered TVs, the company is going to increase sales due to the very low number of TV owners in rural households. This will even allow it to double its turnover according to the company’s forecasts.
In general, M-Kopa has transformed Kenya by providing power to remote areas that are still awaiting the state’s electrification system. About 300,000 households and businesses in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania use M-Kopa products.
Jesse Moore, the company’s chief executive, says the goal is to have a million customers by the end of 2017.
Solar TV is expected to be available in Kenya from the middle of this year.
