A recent study by Xalam Analytics, the Heavy Reading research unit in Africa and the Middle East, finds that buying a data packet and using it with Viber or WhatsApp allows African mobile consumers to realize a saving of 40% to 99% on the cost of using a traditional telecommunication service.
A study that reinforces the fear of traditional telephone operators in Africa, facing the giants of 2.0 and voice over IP, WhatsApp and Viber.
But the company Viber, owner of the eponymous application, seems to have understood the challenge. Build solid partnerships with telecommunications companies and telecom operators in Africa.
A partnership that would resolve once and for good, the problem of blocking this VoIP application by several telecom companies who see it as an unfair competitor, just like the other applications that are Whatsapp and Skype.
“We are certainly open to exploring the possibilities of partnership with telecommunications operators in African markets” said Marc Hardy, marketing director of Viber recently in an interview.
