On January 2, 2019, Isaac Munyakazi, Minister of State for Primary and Secondary Education, announced the opening of the country’s first software programming school. In an interview with the Rwandan newspaper The New Times, the minister said that a first group of sixty young technology enthusiasts, selected from all over the country, will begin classes this year.

Future learners are those who have achieved good results in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) during last year’s O’Level national exams.

The specialized training facility, hosted at the Nyabihu School of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), will strengthen the country’s efforts to become a regional technology hub. Its construction, completed at the beginning of last year, cost the state more than 4 billion Rwandan Francs (US $ 4,441,638). Over time, it will welcome more and more learners.

According to Eugene Mutimura, the Minister of Education, the goal of this school is to “build a knowledge-based economy and encourage our young people to acquire the skills they need to compete at the top of a growing world.” constant evolution “. He added that after their three-year training, “we will put trained learners in touch with the respective industries and some of the largest local and international technology companies for future growth.”

“During these three years, students will also be sent overseas for six months of training in some of the largest IT colleges and technology companies, sharing their knowledge and experience with their colleagues. peers and experts, “said Eugène Mutimura.

For the Minister of Education, “we believe this coding school will foster excellence in our ICT sector and reduce public spending related to dependence of foreign companies to provide us with technological solutions.”
