In 2016, Senegal will host the country’s first fiber optic manufacturing plant. The agreement relating to the establishment of this infrastructure was signed on November 25, 2015 between Yaya Abdoul Kane, the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, representing the Senegalese government, the Association for the Development of the Photonic Industry of Korea from the South (KAPID) and the Research Institute for Electronics and Telecommunications (ETRI).
With this technical asset in its sleeve, Senegal will no longer have to import optical fiber at too high a cost. It “will be able to dispose of it at a lower cost, since it will be manufactured on site. This will make it possible to go towards broadband with the coverage of the national territory, “rejoiced Yaya Abdul Kane. A fiber optic manufacturing plant is truly a boon for the country which is resolutely committed to bringing very high speed to its population, wherever it is, at low cost, to stimulate national growth through the information and communication technologies.
The fiber optic plant could be of great help in carrying out the third phase of the “Larely Senegal” project entrusted to Huawei at low cost. This phase concerns the deployment of 3000 km of optical fiber across the national territory.
