The Council of Ministers of the Republic of Togo was held on April 07, 2016. During the meeting, a mandate was given to the Minister of Posts and Digital Economy to initiate actions whose final goal is tax exemption mobile terminals and other computer equipment intended for consumers.

The tax exemption of ICT equipment, the government of Togo would like it to come into force next year. The measure will therefore be presented to the National Assembly for adoption. Through the elimination of customs duties on mobile phones, laptops, etc., Togo would like to give the entire population the opportunity to “take full advantage of the investments made by the State” in telecommunications.

According to alwihdainfo.com, the decision of the Togolese government to initiate actions to lead to the tax exemption of ICT equipment comes after a study by the Togolese Revenue Office (OTR) and the Telecommunications and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority Posts (ART & P) on contributions from terminals and IT equipment to the State’s tax revenue.

To enjoy quality telecom services and high-speed Internet, consumers need the right tools. But if these tools are overpriced because not everyone can afford them, fiber optics and other improved communications infrastructure deployed by the state and telecom companies will remain underutilized. Consequently, the fiscal contribution of these telecom companies to the public treasury, the volume of which depends on that of their income generated by the consumption of their offers and services by the populations, will remain low. The digital economy that the country wants to achieve will not be realized in the defined plans.
