Kenyans will soon be able to use Safaricom’s mobile payment service, M-Pesa, to make purchases on AliExpress, the global e-commerce platform of the Chinese group Alibaba. A partnership agreement has been signed for this purpose between the two companies. It will come into effect in a few weeks.
This collaboration with Alibaba, Safaricom explains that it brings an opportunity for international expansion whose financial repercussions will not be less.
According to Sylvia Mulinge, Safaricom’s customer manager, the need for this partnership is justified by the need that Kenyans are increasingly expressing for distance shopping without the constraints of moving, transporting goods or wasting time. “As our customers opt for digital, they want to shop in a more digital format. That’s why we see e-commerce growing, “she said.
Safaricom says that beyond individuals, the cooperation between M-Pesa and AliExpress will also benefit Kenyan micro-merchants who mainly order their goods from Chinese manufacturers. The new interaction between Safaricom and Alibaba Group should therefore contribute to strengthening the commercial ties between these two parties and between Kenya and China.
