In 2016, Cameroon will densify its fiber optic network by an additional 914 km, with the aim of preparing the country’s interconnection with two other countries in the Cemac zone, namely the Congo and the Central African Republic. This work will be carried out as part of the Central Africa Backbone (CAB) project, the second phase of which has just received funding of 24.2 billion CFA francs from the AfDB.

In addition to the two CEMAC countries mentioned above, this extension of the Cameroon fiber optic network will also make it possible to densify the Cameroonian part of the Nigeria-Cameroon Submarine Cable System (NCSCS), already 1100 km long, which connects the two countries, we learned.

The works will officially cost 32.2 billion CFA francs. In addition to the 24.2 billion CFA francs provided by the African Development Bank (AfDB), the State of Cameroon will have to make available more than 7 billion CFA francs.

As a reminder, the CAB project was launched in 2009. Its first phase, which essentially consisted of a fiber optic network of the major metropolises of Cameroon, will end in the first quarter of 2016. Coupled with other national projects such as the National Broadband Network, this phase of the CAB will have contributed to bringing Cameroon’s fiber optic network to more than 6000 km.

CEO AfrikaTech

Rejoignez-nous ! LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/boubacardiallo
