Portuguese construction group Mota-Engil and Turkish giant Yapi Merkezi have been chosen for the construction of a 400-kilometer section, according to Bloomberg.

The work involves the rehabilitation of the existing road between Dar Es Salaam and Isaka in northwestern Tanzania, over 970 kilometers, and the construction of the Isaka – Kigali sections over 494 kilometers and Keza – Musongati (197 kilometers) in Burundi. The overall cost is estimated at 7.5 billion dollars.

According to Bloomberg, which does not specify on which of these sections the contract was awarded, Mota-Engil and Yapi Merkezi will be responsible for the construction of 400 kilometers of railway line.

Ultimately, the development of the rail network would be able to considerably increase freight transfer, as well as passenger transport, and lower costs, according to the project note sent to potential investors in July 2015.

The Portuguese group Mota-Engil is successful in the region, where it recently won the contract to build the Bugesera International Airport in Rwanda.
