A large consumer of rice on the continent, Nigeria intends to reduce imports by producing 16% of local consumption.
The country, which remains the world’s largest importer of rice, consumes nearly 6.5 million tonnes per year and produces only 2.5.
The ambition is therefore to produce 225,000 tonnes of rice by the end of the year and more than one million tonnes over a period of five years.
A noble ambition and which will be materialized by the ambitious “Dangote rice” project, a rice sector whose pilot phase was launched Wednesday in Sokoto State, by Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote (photo).
According to our colleagues from Africanews, “rice paddies spread over three states in the north of the country, covering an area of 25,000 hectares, will be used”.
The site emphasizes that this is therefore a diversification of the activities of Africa’s richest man, known for his cement factories across the continent.
