Independent power producer Kingline has announced that construction of the 550 MW gas-fired power plant in Ondo State will begin in June. The South Korean company, which has just obtained the approval of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, will set up the plant, in collaboration with the state government.
“The project is in the phase preceding the mobilization of funding,” said Akinnola Fola, director of Nigerian operations at Kingline. The plant, which has a total capacity of 1,100 MW, will be built in two phases which will each allow the installation of 550 MW of installation. Construction will take 26 months, once the required approvals have been obtained.
The supply of the turbines and the engineering work will be carried out by POSPO E & C, a partner company of Kingline.
The installation of this plant comes at a time when the new Nigerian government has set itself the objective of doubling the country’s energy capacity within 3 years by increasing it to 10,000 MW. 2,000 MW of the additional capacity required, should be added during this year 2016.
